Important Questions
Which payment options are popular in public transport?
Mostly, public transport payments are split into three categories: closed-loop, account-based, and ad-hoc. And of course, there are overlaps. Closed-loop schemes are valid for one operator or a group of partnered operators. Good examples include the NS Card in the Netherlands and the Oyster Card in London.
These can also be seen as account-based schemes, with a travel card as the identifier. Another account-based option is for a customer to have an online subscription, with their bank card or smartphone as the identifier. Ad-hoc payments range from buying tickets at ticket machines and booths, to open-loop access with smart scanners to track the journey (see Transport for London (TfL) example).
How does MaaS impact public transport payments?
Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) is an important evolution in public transport. There are differing opinions about how far it will go, but we are certainly moving to a more integrated transport network. Operators must contend with a variety of payment and travel preferences; from the app-based planner and digital ticket system, to open-loop contactless (NFC) payments at access gates. People will want to use the bus, train, bike, car, and private taxi to reach their destination. This might be paired with parking services, or other added-value items. Complex fares must be calculated instantly, without error. It’s a huge challenge for transport operators, but CCV will help you implement the right hardware, software, and integrations.
Where can I learn more about public transport payments?
Luckily, we have published a lot of content on this topic. Click here to read our interview with Giuliano Mingardo, senior researcher at the Erasmus Centre for Urban, Port and Transport Economics. Giuliano is an expert in parking and mobility management. In our interview, he talks in depth about future mobility trends. He analyses the shift to a more MaaS-like society, and offers a balanced view on public transport, private transport, and parking. If you’re interested in mobility, his ideas are worth reading!
We have also published an article asking: are major cities are ready for Mobility-as-a-Service? In that piece, we dig into the definitions of MaaS and the major challenges that face stakeholders. From security, to business models and data compatibility, it’s a long and winding road. CCV will help you navigate the payments question on this journey.
