What RED means for payment terminals

Günther Froschermeier, Head of Payment Solutions at CCV, shares why the EU’s new RED regulation is no problem at all and actually a big opportunity

Wireless devices in the EU are entering a new era of regulation. Since August 2025, the extended Radio Equipment Directive (RED) requires all connected devices to meet stronger cybersecurity and hardware standards. At first glance, this may sound like a challenge for payment technology providers. But at CCV, it’s business as usual. We spoke with Günther Froschermeier, Chief Technology Officer at CCV, about how the company is already meeting the requirements and why RED is a chance to lead with trust, security and sustainability.

A stronger focus on cybersecurity and USB-C

The RED (Radio Equipment Directive) has been around for a while, covering safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and radio spectrum efficiency. But starting August 2025, a new layer has been added. With Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/30, the EU introduces stricter cybersecurity requirements for all wireless devices that process data or connect to the internet. On top of that, USB-C charging ports will become mandatory for most electronic devices from the end of 2024.

Originally, RED (2014/53/EU) focused on safety (protection of human health and safety, e.g. electrical safety, as in the Low Voltage Directive), EMC and the efficient use of the radio spectrum. Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/30 now adds new cybersecurity requirements that apply to all wireless devices that process data or are connected to the internet from 1 August 2025", Günther explains. "For payment terminals, this means they need to protect personal data, be fraud-resistant, and avoid network-related harm. And from a hardware side, USB-C is simply the way forward.

Already compliant, already ahead

While these updates may seem daunting for some manufacturers, CCV sees them as business as usual.

We already work with high standards like PCI-PTS, PCI-P2PE, PCI-DSS, PSD2, and DORA. In that context, aligning with RED is relatively easy," Günther says. "Our latest devices, such as the CCV Mobile A960, already meet many of the new expectations.

The company’s internal frameworks cover key areas like network security, data protection, and tamper resistance. RED’s additions, including the new EN-18031 standards, are a natural extension.

No changes for existing devices

One common concern among businesses is whether they’ll need to upgrade or recall terminals already in the field. Günther is quick to clarify.

That’s not necessary. Existing devices benefit from grandfathering rules. RED applies only to devices placed on the market after the regulation comes into force. Anything already deployed or in stock is exempt.

Designing for tomorrow, not just today

With new terminal models in development, CCV is taking the opportunity to integrate USB-C and make consumer information clearer and more accessible.

We’ve always been advocates of practical innovation,” Günther says. “USB-C is not yet mandatory for payment terminals, but we believe in it because it reduces e-waste and simplifies charging setups.

CCV also ensures that cybersecurity features are already built into its terminals and clearly documented in CE declarations of conformity. Transparency is key, especially when it comes to providing information such as power output or the presence of a power supply.

Using RED as a trust builder

While RED is regulatory by nature, Günther believes it can actually strengthen customer relationships.

This is a great moment to show that we’re not just reacting to change - we’re ahead of it,” he says. “By informing customers early and offering compliant, future-ready solutions, we’re reinforcing our role as a reliable partner.”

The new rules also open up conversations around sustainability.

Maybe it’s time we stop including chargers by default," Günther adds. "That’s something we’re exploring together with our partners.

At CCV, the RED regulation is not a hurdle but a validation of our approach to secure, reliable and future-ready payments. As Günther says, we’re already there and we’re ready to support our partners every step of the way.
